Egg, sperm and embryo donation

Donation is the pathway most people arrive at reluctantly and then feel relieved by, once someone explains it properly. It is also the pathway with the sharpest legal differences between countries, so it is worth reading the last section carefully.

Egg donation

Donors are young, screened for infectious disease and karyotype, and matched to you on phenotype, blood group and background. You see a non-identifying profile before matching is confirmed. The programme guarantees a minimum of 10 mature eggs; if fewer are collected, the cycle is repeated with another donor at no additional donor cost. Because the eggs are young, success rates hold up regardless of your own age — which is precisely why it is recommended above roughly 43–45.

Sperm and double donation

Donor sperm comes from a screened bank and is used where there is no retrievable sperm, a genetic condition you do not want to pass on, or no male partner. Double donation — donor egg and donor sperm — is the route for couples where both sides are affected, and it produces the highest success rates of any pathway offered.

Embryo donation

Embryos donated by other patients who completed their own treatment. It is the least expensive donor route and involves no fertilisation step, but you have no input into the genetic pairing and availability is limited.

The legal position — read this

Gamete donation in North Cyprus is anonymous by law. Neither you nor the child can obtain identifying information about the donor, and the donor has no route to contact you. Several countries — the UK among them — have moved to donor-identifiable systems, and a donor-conceived child raised there may expect an access route that does not exist for a North Cyprus donation. This is not a reason not to proceed. It is a reason to make the decision knowingly, and to think early about what you will tell a child and when.

Worth knowing

Donation raises the chance of a healthy embryo. It does not overcome an implantation problem in the uterus — if you have had repeated failures with good-quality embryos, the investigation should look at the lining, not only the eggs.
