The laboratory is where most of the difference between clinics actually lies, and it is the part patients are given least information about. These are the technologies worth understanding — and worth asking whether you need.
A time-lapse incubator with a built-in camera. Conventional grading means removing embryos from the incubator to look at them, exposing them to light and temperature change at a fragile moment. Time-lapse leaves them undisturbed and records development continuously, so the embryologist sees not just how an embryo looks at one point but how it got there — including division patterns that predict poor outcomes and are invisible on a single daily check.
Sperm selection at magnification high enough to see structural defects in the sperm head that standard ICSI magnification cannot resolve. It is worth considering where morphology is very poor, DNA fragmentation is high, or previous ICSI cycles have fertilised badly. For a normal sample it adds cost without a clear benefit.
A thinning of the outer shell of the embryo before transfer, to help it emerge and implant. The evidence supports it in specific situations — thickened zona, frozen embryos, older patients — and does not support applying it to everyone.
Worth knowing
None of these turn a poor-quality embryo into a good one. They improve how well the best available embryo is identified and protected. If you are being sold every add-on at once, that is a warning sign — ask which one addresses your specific failure point.
